Safety Culture: What Is It, Really?
It’s difficult for most people to give a simple answer to what safety culture is.
“Coming home from work,” “thinking things through beforehand,” and “wearing the right protective equipment” are all good answers that come to mind right away.
Safety culture is, at its core, about proactively increasing safe behaviors.
By defining these behaviors in concrete terms and then going ALL IN to ensure the right conditions are in place—so that safe behaviors are reinforced MORE than risky ones—we move from reactive to proactive management of the work environment.
Some key elements of safety work:
– Involve those exposed to the risks
– Ensure the right conditions (organizational, systematic, and relational—in leadership)
– Reinforce safe behaviors
